PARTIAL LEAST SQUARES – STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODELING

(PLS-SEM: A HANDS-ON TRAINING USING SMARTPLS)

We received more than 300 registrations.  Unfortunately, we do no have more available seats!

Description

Partial Least Squares (PLS) path modeling is a structural equation modeling technique which is especially suitable when the assumptions for applying Maximum Likelihood based techniques (such as LISREL) do not apply, like in the case of exploratory research or small samples. In such cases, PLS is far less likely to lead to inappropriate solutions or non-convergenc

This training will introduce the use of PLS-SEM. It will help attendees (postgraduate students/ researchers/faculty members) on how to apply SEM using the SmartPLS software and how to present the results professionally. The course will use practical hands on approach with real research data sets with research questions that can be answered using the available datasets.

Objectives

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the difference between two main types of SEM i.e., (i) Covariance based SEM and (ii) PLS-SEM.
  • Understand the conditions where PLS-SEM can be used.
  • Apply PLS-SEM to analyses research data.
  • Interpret the results to answer research questions.

Estimated Time Frame

14 hours across 2 days

Cost

The workshop is free of charge, thanks to ANAHEI, USFSM and ADU. However, registration is required. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses. Lunch will be served during the workshop.

Requirements

For all participants, some knowledge of statistics, linear regression, and the characteristics of normal random variables and probability distributions will be helpful. Please bring a laptop with you to the workshop. You will be given instruction on how to download the PLS software for free (We will provide the attachment).

Note: Participants can also bring with them a data set that they are using in their own research, which they can then use to test a PLS structural equation model. Participants who want to use their own data should preferably have at least some ideas about (1) the structural model they want to test (i.e., which constructs are related to which other constructs) and (2) which indicators measure each of the constructs.

Certificate

All successful participants will be awarded a “Certificate of Completion” by Association of North America Higher Education International and M3 Center at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, Sarasota, Florida, USA.

Workshop Schedule

We will be discussing the principles of SEM through PLS in the morning, and apply these principles in a practice session in the afternoon. On the second day, we focus on some special topics, which we will again apply in the afternoon.
